Resveratrol is a phytoalexin, which is produced naturally by several plants when under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi. It can also be produced by chemical synthesis. Resveratrol is present in relatively high concentration in red wine. It can be beneficial for the heart when it is consumed in moderate amount.
In some research studies it is observed that those who take red wine regularly at a moderate level, they die less from cardiovascular disease compared to those who are not alcoholic or drink not in excess. This level also improves lipoprotein metabolism and lower cardiovascular mortality risk.
Resveratrol is also a powerful antioxidant. This helps in blood vessels. In a research, it is found that Resveratrol protects from cellular damage to blood vessels which occurs due to high production of glucose in diabetes. These increased levels of glucose can affect on heart disease, kidney disease, and blindness.
It helps to reduce cholesterol Resveratrol has found to regulate the metabolism of lipids, and restrain the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins, that helps to regulate cholesterol levels.
It protects the blood circulation and heart function. Nitric oxide is a major component in heart function, which allows blood vessels to maintain blood flow normally. It has been found that diet high in cholesterol decrease the function of nitric oxide by about one third.
Thus, resveratrol protects our heart and helps to live long.
